Risk in Cyberphysical Systems: Grid Splitting

Contact: Prof. Sansavini

The objective of this project is to develop a simulation framework to quantify reliability in interdependent electric power and communication systems. The special protection scheme named grid splitting is investigated, which requires the communication infrastructure to transmit measurement and control signals for the detection of an impending instability as well as the separation of the power system into synchronized islands. The resulting clusters minimize the power flow disruption after grid splitting by appropriately assigning load buses to groups of coherent generators. The developed simulation framework allows the quantification of the reliability of grid splitting as a function of uncertain external traffic conditions and the data rate of the non-dedicated open communication infrastructure.
